On June 11, Walt Disney Studios will be releasing three of their full-length animated features for the first time on Blu-ray Disc: The Emperor’s New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Lilo & Stitch.
While Amazon.com and other retailers aren’t listing a release date, StitchKingdom.com has confirmed the June 11, 2013 street date with the folks at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.
Unfortunately (at least if you’re me), the Blu-ray discs are following in the trend of the recently released Disney Blu-ray titles Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Mulan where the discs contain the original feature film along with their direct-to-video animated sequel or “cheapquel” (Cinderella 2 or 3, anyone?). The cheapquels represent a dark time in Disney history which I hope doesn’t get repeated anytime soon. Still, it’s great to have HD versions of these films from the storied Walt Disney Animation Studios canon. Special features for the discs have yet to be announced; we at Animation Fascination will keep you posted when more details are available.
