Rumor Alert: ‘Monsters, Inc.’ and ‘Tron’ Coasters Coming to Disneyland?

Do you like Disney theme parks? Well, this next story should give you something fun to think about. Al Lutz, who runs the Disney watchdog and fan site MiceAge.com reported in his “MiceAge Update” column on Tuesday that Disney is “seriously considering” building a Monsters, Inc. roller coaster thrill ride in the Disney California Adventure park , which is located adjacent to Disneyland park in Anaheim, California. Lutz also reported in the same article that a Tron-based attraction “is quickly nearing a green light” for the Tomorrowland area of the iconic Disneyland park itself.

The Monsters, Inc. coaster is rumored to be based on the film’s memorable final scene where Sulley, Mike, and Boo are being chased down by Randall in the giant door warehouse. While it has been rumored for years that this coaster would be built at Disney’s Hollywood Studios park in Walt Disney World in Florida, emphasis has shifted, according to Lutz, and that first iteration of the coaster will be built in Disney California Adventure park.

Lutz states that the attraction is slated for the Hollywoodland area (formerly known as Hollywood Pictures Backlot), where the current “MuppetVision 3D” attraction and the now empty Stage 17 building (home to the former “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Play It!” attraction) are located, if you are familiar the park’s layout. With it being adjacent to existing the “Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue!” dark ride, the area in front of both attractions would be re-themed as a Monstropolis mini-land, as reported by Lutz.

While not directly related to the animation stories we cover here on Animation Fascination, it is still fantastic news that a Tron attraction might be underway for Disneyland in California as well. Rumors have been circulating for years around the Disney fan community about a possible Tron theme park attraction. While Disney is keeping tight-lipped about the actual attractions that are going to be ready on opening day for the new Shanghai Disneyland park currently under construction in China, it has been widely reported that a Tron-based “light cycle” coaster will be one of them.

The Shanghai Disneyland Tron coaster is rumored to be a modified motorbike launch coaster made by ride manufacturer Vekoma with of course an awesome Tron overlay designed by the pros at Walt Disney Imagineering. With the much of the development work for the attraction already completed for the Shanghai project, it might be possible that a version of the ride will be built in Disneyland. While he didn’t give a lot of details, Lutz stated that the rumored Tron attraction would be built in Tomorrowland “using much of the old PeopleMover route,” whatever that actually means.

As with anything stated by Al Lutz or any other Disney rumor, don’t believe anything until construction actually starts in earnest. But still, this is really happy news for this Disney theme park fan to consider. What do you think?

  1. If this is true, I think it’ll be one of the best new attractions at Disney. I mean “Tron” is just begging for a ride/roller coaster! And the doors sector of “Monsters Inc.” opens up a slew of creative ideas from the Imagineers!
