Watch This: ‘Ratchet and Clank’ Movie Teaser Trailer

Yesterday morning, slightly strange and oddly exiting news has arisen that there is a Ratchet and Clank movie in production. The popular computer game from Insomniac Games will be the basis for an intergalactic origin story of how the two title characters met. The trailer can be seen below…

The synopsis from the press release is as follows:

 ‘Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind – a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.’

The CG studios behind the film are Blockade Entertainment (Escape From Planet Earth) and Rainmaker Entertainment, while Insomniac Games will play a hands-on role in production, screenplay, character development and animation consulting. Insomniac senior community manager James Stevenson wrote this on the Playstation blog:

 “One of the biggest questions we’ve gotten in the last few years is ‘When are you going to make a Ratchet & Clank movie?”

“The truth is, we’ve wanted to do a movie for a long time! Ratchet & Clank’s action, humour and galaxy-spanning adventures have really been the basis for a fantastic game series, and we think it’d translate perfectly to the big screen.”

Compared to a lot of computer game adaptions this one could be quite promising. The characters are perfect for the big screen and there is a gap in the market for an intergalactic, humorous animation. The relationship between the two main characters in an interesting one and it will be great to see how their paths crossed and how they became such good friends. Perhaps it will be similar to Mike and Sulley’s friendship born from rivalry we’ll see in Pixar’s Monsters University in a couple of months. Watch this space for more news.
