EPIC, the new full-length animated feature by Blue Sky Studios hits theaters on May 24th, and early word from the top critics is fairly positive. Directed by Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Robots), EPIC focuses on a war being fought in our backyards–literally.

This is not your typical animated, Broadway-level singing and dancing animals show or PIXAR-level morality play, but an action-packed adventure piece centered on the battle between good and evil.

The Hollywood trades have sounded off with mostly encouraging reviews. Variety calls the film “reasonably entertaining,” and The Hollywood Reporter says, “EPIC makes for pleasantly engaged viewing.” To add to that, when our site editor Marc Vibbert recently saw an advance screening of the film he was pleasantly surprised with how much he actually enjoyed it as well.

EPIC is currently scored at 65% positive on Rotten Tomatoes, with most of the professional reviews coming off as affirmative to the film. The true test comes when the film opens nationwide tomorrow and audiences everywhere have their chance to sound off.

EPIC stars the voices of Beyonce, Academy-award winner Christophe Waltz, Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, and Aziz Ansari, among many others. The 3D adventure is Blue-Sky Studios co-founder, Chris Wedge’s first directorial effort since 2005’s Robots.
