The Walt Disney Studios recently announced some updates to their theatrical release schedule. Included on this list is a sequel to Disneytoon Studios’ Planestitled Planes: Fire & Rescue which is scheduled to be released July 18, 2014. While these dates are always subject to change, it’s interesting to get a glimpse into what Disney has planned for the new Planes franchise that is about to be launched this summer.
Planes arrives in U.S. theaters in 3D on August 9, 2013.
Many animation fans were disappointed about the cancellation of Pixar’s film Newt, the directorial debut of sound designer extraordinaire Gary Rydstrom. Although Newt was never made, Gary has remained hard at work on other projects.
20th Century Fox (which we believe is still the name of the film division of the newly renamed 21st Century Fox, the entertainment group spinoff of News Corp.) has announced release dates for all of its film slate through 2018. 20th Century Fox is home to Fox Animation Studios and Blue Sky Studios and is now the exclusive distributor for films from DreamWorks Animation.
Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures have put together a “Global Smurfs Day” to be held Saturday, June 22, 2013. The worldwide event honors the birth of Peyo (the nickname of comic book artist and Smurf creator Pierre Culliford) who was born on June 25, 1928, and celebrates the upcoming release of Sony Pictures Animation’s new film The Smurfs 2. This is the second time such an event has been held; the first one was to celebrate the release of Sony’s 2011 film The Smurfs.
A new trailer for Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel is now showing on IGN’s YouTube channel. Coming this summer to Disney Channel, Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel is the first crossover animated TV special to include both Disney and Marvel characters.
The Australian Outback is the setting of the next full-length feature from DreamWorks Animation, and they are bringing along award-winning composer, comedian, actor and writer Tim Minchin along for the walkabout. Minchin, who will be adding his considerable talents to the project, which DreamWorks Animation calls an “all-animal musical comedy,” is joining writer Harry Cripps (Supernova) and producer Christina Steinberg (Rise of the Guardians, National Treasure) on the newly unveiled project.
Relativity Media and Reel FX’s upcoming animated feature Free Birds has announced more additions to its voice cast. Eddie ‘Piolin’ Sotelo (Ice Age: Continental Drift), Danny Carey (drummer from the band Tool) and Josh Lawson (The Campaign) have joined the already impressive cast for the film, which includes Owen Wilson (Cars), Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games), Amy Poehler (Horton Hears a Who!), George Takei (Star Trek, Internet God), Dan Fogler (Kung Fu Panda 2), Colm Meaney (Con Air) and Keith David (The Princess and the Frog).
Animator, writer and director Burny Mattinson celebrated his 60th year of working at The Walt Disney Company this week. The commemoration and celebration were held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Roy E. Disney Animation Building on The Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, CA.
Yesterday I was lucky enough to get tickets to an early screening of Pixar’s latest feature, Monsters University, the prequel to their 2001 blockbuster Monsters, Inc. As I made my way along London’s Southbank towards the British Film Institute, my excitement grew as this wasn’t just a screening of the film but also a Q&A session with the film’s producer Kori Rae and its director Dan Scanlon.
