Veteran Pixar and Disney animator John Kahrs has parted ways with the Walt Disney Animation Studios. The news came via the @DisneyAnimators Twitter feed. Kahrs, the Oscar-winning director of Disney’s beautiful and brilliant Paperman short, recently signed with the William Morris Entertainment (WME) agency.
In addition to Paperman, Kahrs worked on such Disney and Pixar greats as Tangled, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Ratatouille, Toy Story 2, and A Bug’s Life. Kahrs’ next project or next employer has not been disclosed.
It appears that John’s departure from Disney was amicable. The @DisneyAnimators Twitter feed also tweeted a picture of the goodbye gift that was created specifically for John–a stylized Sorcerer Mickey hat akin to the one on the Roy E. Disney Animation Building with miniature paper airplanes surrounding it, each plane signed by a Disney animator.
We wish John Kahrs all of the best in his new endeavors and will be excited to learn about his new projects. We also hope that a feature film done in the hybrid Paperman style will be made wherever Mr. Kahrs is off to next.
