We’ve been piecing together some different rumors along with some new art that could be from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ upcoming feature Moana. As we previously posted this past summer, Blue Sky Disney reported that directors Ron Clements and John Musker will be directing the film and that it’s an original story set in Polynesia. The prevailing rumor is that Moana is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “untitled” release set for March 9, 2018.
Bleeding Cool posted earlier this year an image that is most likely development art from the film along with the caption from the artist “I just love Paul Gaugin. Don’t you?”
Last week, Kyle’s Animated World linked to Animation Heronie’s blog on Tumblr with another copy of the image from Bleeding Cool as well as a brand new concept art image.
While I’m not a big fan of promoting unsubstantiated rumors, this art looks cool. It’s been widely reported that Ron and John’s next feature will use some innovative animation techniques similar to what we saw with Disney’s Paperman short last year. If Moana is going to be Gaugin meets Paperman, count me in.
We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

I was wondering if they’d make any films with Paperman techniques! This could be refreshing. Hope it’s true!
