DreamWorks Animation announced today that they have begun preproduction on an animated film based off the New York Times Bestseller, Captain Underpants book series by author Dav Pilkey.
Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall; The Muppets) is writing the script, and Rob Letterman (Shark Tale; Monsters Vs. Aliens) will direct.
The movie will follow the story of two best friends who create a fictional comic book at school, and then their creation becomes “real” when the school’s principal gets hypnotized into thinking that he is the titular hero.
The Captain Underpants book series has sold over 50 million books since 1997 and is beloved by an entire generation for its wit and charm.
Damon Ross, a development executive at DreamWorks Animation, is producing the project. There is no word on if the film will be in 3D, or any clue to the release date window. Toon into Animation Fascination for further details when they are released.
