While it’s not necessarily considered an animated feature, New Line Cinema and MGM’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug probably has more animation in it than most films do. The monster hit film and second in Peter Jackson’s ambitious (and very long) The Hobbit trilogy is coming to Blu-ray on April 8th and is going to be available in lots of different packaging.
First up is a fancy Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack which includes two “Gates of Erebor” replica bookends from the Noble Collection and features the theatrical version of the film in 3D hi-definition, hi-definition and standard definition. Only 25,000 sets of the Limited Collector’s Edition will be available in the U.S.
Next is the Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack which features the theatrical version of the film in 3D hi-definition, hi-definition and standard definition. The Blu-ray Combo Pack features the theatrical version of the film in hi-definition. The two-disc DVD Special Edition set includes the standard definition edition of the film. All versions of the film include a digital version of the movie on Digital HD with UltraViolet.
Fans will also be able purchase a digital HD version of the film beginning on April 8th from a variety of digital retailers, including Amazon.com, CinemaNow, Flixster, iTunes, PlayStation, Target Ticket, Vudu, Xbox and others. Also on April 8th, the film will made available on Video On Demand services from cable and satellite providers and on select gaming consoles.
