GKIDS has secured the North American distribution rights to director Tomm Moore’s (The Secret of Kells) second animated feature Song of the Sea. Inspired by the mythological Irish “Selkies” (seals who shed their skin to become humans on land), the 2D animated film tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse, the last “Seal-child,” as they embark on a journey of “ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their homeland by the sea.”
The animation for the film comes from Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon, in partnership with the European animation houses Melusine Productions, The Big Farm, Norlum, and Superprod.
Director Tomm Moore had this to say about GKIDS:
“I am delighted to be working again with GKIDS after our successful partnership on ‘The Secret of Kells’. The two companies are perfectly aligned in their vision for animated filmmaking and GKIDS’ special focus and experience make them ideal partners to bring our next feature film to North American audiences.”
Song of the Sea features the voice talents of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt, and Jon Kenny.
The film is scheduled to be released in 2014 (date TBA). To learn more, check out director Tomm Moore’s Song of the Sea movie blog along with the film’s Facebook page.
