Image Comic’s award-winning series Chew is getting the animated film treatment. Directed by Jeff Krelitz (Torchwood: Web of Lies, Game Over, Peter Panzerfaust), produced by David Boxenbaum, and written by John Layman, Chew is the first animated project of the newly christened Heavy Metal multimedia company, publishers of the classic Heavy Metal Magazine. The producers are planning for a digital broadcast and home entertainment release for the animated feature.

Chew tells the adventures of detective Tony Ciu, a “cibopath” (a person who gets psychic impressions from whatever he/she eats), who solves crimes with his girlfriend and food critic Amelia Mintz, a “saboscrivner” (a person who can write about food with such perfection that the reader actually feels like he/she is eating whatever food is being described). The stories are set in a modern-day world where bird meats are illegal after bird flu killed millions of Americans. Actor Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) will voice Tony Ciu and actress Felicia Day (The Guild, Fish Hooks) will voice Amelia Mintz.

Krelitz and Boxenbaum recently purchased Heavy Metal Magazine from Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with the plan to use the revived label to release new comics, music, digital, TV and film.
