Deadline is reporting that an animated feature film based on PEEPS marshmallow candies is currently in development. Writer/director Adam Rifkin (Small Soldiers, Underdog, Detroit Rock City) has optioned film and TV rights from the Just Born Inc., the brand owner and manufacturer of the sugary treats.
Rifkin and his producing partners Brian E. Rochlin and Brent Tinter pitched the feature idea to the management team at Just Born and clinched the deal. Their concept is to “adapt Peeps into a LEGO Movie-esque family epic” that takes place the evening before a PEEPS diorama contest (Rifkin got the idea from watching his nephew and niece create a PEEPS diorama for a school project). In the story concept, a wayward PEEP gets misplaced and must venture through the various dioramas to return to his own place before the judging begins.
According to Deadline:
“The idea is to partner with a studio and fold in pre-existing IP, as WB did with Lego minifigs, DC comics characters, and historical and pop culture figures. The filmmakers are currently locking story points before Rifkin writes the script.”
