British actor Bob Hoskins passed away April 29th at age 71. He died after a bout of pneumonia, according to a statement released by his agent. Hoskins had retired from acting in 2012 after announcing that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Tributes to Hoskins are pouring in all over online today. Many mention his gentlemanly nature and his wonderful mastery of the craft of acting. He is credited with acting in 114 films and television shows.

Animation fans mostly know Hoskins for his brilliant work as private eye Eddie Valiant in the 1988 classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Critics and film buffs are also remembering many of the other great roles he played. Total Film lists five essential Bob Hoskins films in addition to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, including The Long Good Friday (1980), Mona Lisa (1986), Hook (1991), and Twenty Four Seven (1997).

I will still never forget the first time I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit. While I was completely bowled over and entertained by the amazing technicalities of the production, I also realized that the movie wouldn’t be what it was without the incredible, believable, and brilliant performance by the great Bob Hoskins. R.I.P. and thank you for sharing your talents with all of us.
