New Animated ‘Flintstones’ Feature in Development

A new animated feature film based on the Hanna-Barbera TV staple The Flintstones is currently in development at Warner Bros. Animation.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are the film’s executive producers and Chris Henchy has been hired as the screenwriter.

The Flintstones was the first primetime animated sitcom and was a big hit during its original run from 1960 to 1966 on ABC. The TV show has lived on for years in syndication and in multiple spin-offs. A dreadful (in my opinion) live-action version was made in 1994 at Universal (the film is notorious for having had 32 different writers contribute to the script) and a live-action prequel in 2000. Most recently, Family Guy‘s Seth MacFarlane tried to re-boot it as a TV series but the pilot was never picked up.

We’ll see if we’re saying “yabba dabba doo” or just “ugh” when the film finally makes it to the big screen.
