Studio Ghibli Blu-rays Coming on November 18th

Three new Blu-rays of English-dubbed Studio Ghibli features are on their way this fall. Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and The Wind Rises are all scheduled to be released in the U.S. on November 18th. All three films were released in the U.S. by The Walt Disney Studios and Disney has put together these new Blu-ray sets.

Originally released in Japan in 1989, Disney’s English dub version of Kiki’s Delivery Service was released in 1998 and features the vocal talents of Kirsten Dunst (Kiki), Matthew Lawrence (Tombo), Phil Hartman (Jiji), Janeane Garofalo (Ursula), Trees MacNeille (Osono) and Debbie Reynolds (Madam Oku-sama). It’s available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

The Kiki’s Delivery Service Blu-ray includes:

  • Original Japanese Storyboards
  • Original Japanese Trailers
  • Behind the Microphone — English voice cast members Kirsten Dunst,Janeane Garofalo and Phil Hartman give voice to their on-screen characters
  • Creating Kiki’s Delivery Service — Director Miyazaki discusses how he created the world of the movie
  • Kiki & Jiji — Producer Toshio Suzuki reveals how Director Miyazaki based the character of Kiki on Suzuki’s teenage daughter
  • Flying with Kiki & Beyond — The director discusses how he approached Kiki flying
  • Producer’s Perspective: Collaborating with Miyazaki — The producer talks about how he worked with the director through the years
  • The Locations of Kiki — The real world locations that influenced the look of the film are revealed
  • Scoring Miyazaki — Composer Joe Hisaishi talks about his approach in writing the music.
  • Ursula’s Painting (ALL NEW) — A musical montage of Ursula’s Painting. The painting was created by junior high school students and used by Director Miyazaki for the film.

Princess Mononoke

Originally released in Japan in 1997, the English dub version of Princess Mononoke was released in the U.S. in 1999 and features the vocal talents of Billy Crudup (Ashitaka), Billy Bob Thornton (Jigo), Minnie Driver (Lady Eboshi), John DiMaggio (Gonza), Claire Danes (San), John DeMita (Kohroku), Jada Pinkett Smith (Toki), Gillian Anderson (Moro) and Keith David (Okkoto). It’s available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

The Princess Mononoke Blu-ray includes:

  • Original Japanese Storyboards
  • Original Japanese and English Trailers
  • Original English Theatrical Trailer
  • Original TV Spots
  • Princess Mononoke in the USA — In September of 1999, Princess Mononoke’s director, Hayao Miyazaki traveled to the US and Canada to promote the film’s release. This feature is a record of those events.
  • Featurette — Jada Pinkett Smith, Claire Danes, Billy Bob Thornton, Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup talk about acting in the English voice cast in Princess Mononoke.

The Wind Rises

The excellent English dub of Studio Ghibli’s stunning 2013 film The Wind Rises is also scheduled to be released on Blu-ray in the U.S. on November 18th. It’s now available for pre-order on Amazon.com, but no details have been released yet on any special features, etc. Stay tuned to Animation Fascination for the latest news on information.
