We’ve all been hearing for years about the decline of DVD and Blu-ray sales. And while there’s hasn’t been any doubt about the popularity and convenience of streaming services and digital downloads over physical discs, it still hit us pretty hard to learn that Fox will no longer be releasing any further seasons of The Simpsons on physical media.
Fox released seasons 1-17 and season 20 on DVD (and some on Blu-ray, too), along with plentiful and hilarious commentaries, deleted scenes, and bonus features that made the discs highly collectable and popular. Fox doesn’t have any plans to release seasons 18 and 19 on DVD. All future seasons, and presumably seasons 18 and 19, will have commentary tracks and bonus features available for viewing in the U.S. on the SimpsonsWorld.com website. The plans for international markets have yet to be announced.
Simpsons’ showrunner Al Jean addressed the announcement (as well as tried to respond to the fan backlash) on his Twitter feed:
The DVD collectors of the world have reason to mourn the end of an era in the ever-changing media landscape. And although Bart said, “Nothing you say can upset us; we’re the MTV generation,” this news is a major bummer, man.
