We’re all familiar with the epic The Lord of the Rings film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved trilogy from director Peter Jackson. But have you ever seen the 1978 animated feature film version from director Ralph Bakshi? Well, get ready to set your DVRs because Turner Classic Movies will be screening the film on September 2nd at 3:15 a.m. ET (check your TCM feed for the time in your area).
Although it’s called The Lord of Rings, it only covers the story of The Fellowship of the Ring and the first half of The Two Towers. (A sequel was planned, but never made.) The film is noted for its major use of rotoscoping, particularly in the battle sequences. I’m planning to tune in (well, record it on my DVR) because I haven’t seen it for many years. I remember thinking it was pretty trippy, but we’ll see how it plays with my present mind set.
