Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment have released a new trailer for their upcoming animated DC Universe Original Movie Batman: The Killing Joke.
The film, an adaptation of the controversial 1988 graphic novel by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, is the first R-rated animated DC Universe Original Movie. The trailer looks like the movie stays close to the source material, which is a violent origin story of the Joker.
Crystal Bell at MTV News had this to say:
Moore’s comic isn’t for the faint of heart. In fact, The Killing Joke remains one of the most controversial graphic novels ever created in DC Comics’s 82-year history. It’s a tragic origin story for one of Batman’s greatest foes: the Joker. And it explores the mythos behind the Clown Prince’s madness. Hailed by some as the definitive Joker text, Moore’s story is still controversial among DC Comics fans today. It’s dark, tragic, and brutally misogynistic — at times, unbearably so.
The film is directed by Sam Liu (Justice League vs. Teen Titans, Beware the Batman) and features the return of Kevin Conroy as the voice Bruce Wayne/Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker as well as Tara Strong as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl and Ray Wise as Commissioner Gordon.
Batman: The Killing Joke will make its debut at San Diego Comic-Con this summer and land on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD later in 2016.
