Check out the film’s official trailer.
The film is written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman and produced by BreakThru Films based in Poland and Trademark Films based in the UK.
The filmmakers were passionate about telling Vincent’s story and knew that they couldn’t tell it without his paintings. So, they shot the film with actors and then painted over each frame in a van Gogh style. According to the film’s website:
Loving Vincent is the world’s first fully painted film. We painted over 65,000 frames on over 1,000 canvases. We shot the film with actors, and literally painted over it frame by frame. This is a very laborious and time-consuming process. It has taken us 4 years to develop the technique, and it took us over 2 years with a team of over 100 painters working at studios in the Polish cities of Gdansk and Wroclaw, and a studio in Athens to complete the film.
Here’s a cool behind-the-scenes story that aired on CBS News about the making of the film.
Loving Vincent opens in select U.S. theaters beginning September 22nd. Follow the film on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and on its official website.
