Walt Disney Animation Studios rocked the D23 Expo 2015 this year with some amazing stuff. My time at the Expo was limited, but I was happy (and grateful) that I was able to get a seat for the “Welcome to Zootopia!” panel held on Saturday, August 15th, 2015, at the Anaheim Convention Center. Here’s a quick rundown of what was presented.
At the D23 Expo 2015 last weekend, Walt Disney Animation Studios made it official—their long-rumored feature about giants will be released in 2018 and will be called Gigantic.

I just got back from spending the weekend in sunny Anaheim, CA at this year’s D23 Expo 2013. As you know, The Walt Disney Company throws this event every other year as their own Disney-specific Comic-Con, so to speak. The first D23 Expo was held in 2009, the second in 2011 and the third one just took place on August 9 -11, 2013. Having been to all three, I have a few comparative things to say along with an overall review of what I experienced at the Anaheim Convention Center over the weekend.
At Friday’s “Art and Imagination: Animation at The Walt Disney Studios” presentation, chief creative officer John Lasseter was the host for a 3+ hour presentation on the current slate of films at Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disneytoon Studios. The Pixar slate was presented first and the crowd (myself included) was completely wowed by the clips shown by the Pixar filmmakers.
For the “Art and Imagination: Animation at The Walt Disney Studios” presentation that occurred Friday at the D23 Expo 2013 in Anaheim, CA, Walt Disney Animation Studios took center stage to showcase its upcoming films along with a very clever and funny new (well, “old”) short film. The presentation was marvelous and it showcased how the filmmakers at the revered studio are taking the Disney animated feature film in new and exciting directions while still honoring the legacy of the genre that was created by Walt Disney himself.
John Lasseter, Disney’s chief creative officer, announced new films today coming from Disneytoon Studios, Disney’s direct-to-video division during his epic “Art and Imagination: Animation at The Walt Disney Studios” presentation Friday, August 9 at the D23 Expo 2013. First up were two new films from Disneytoon’s Fairies label: The Legend of the Neverbeast and The Pirate Fairy followed by a sneak peek at 2014’s Planes sequel Planes: Fire and Rescue.
