2013 Animation on Blu-ray/DVD Holiday Gift Guide

The movie studios are spreading lots of holiday cheer this year by releasing new animated films and series on Blu-ray just in time for the big gift giving season. We’ve recently reported on new titles coming to Blu-ray from the Walt Disney Studios. Here are some other items to consider giving to the animation fans in your life…

19 Films Submitted for Best Animated Film Oscar Race

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (The Oscars) recently released the names of the 19 films that are vying for this year’s Best Animated Feature Film award. 

And the Winner is… Animation?

If you haven’t heard, the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have changed some of the rules in the Best Animated Feature category for 2013’s Academy Awards. The most drastic change is that the Academy members will not have to attend screenings in LA to vote on the films. They will have the option of viewing the movies on DVD, thus opening up the voting pool to many more of the 6,000 members who don’t reside in SoCal. The members also only have to view 66% of the films to vote as opposed to the 80% in previous years.

Summer 2013: Animation Over-Saturation?

What a summer it’s been for animated movies. Starting with the late March release of DreamWorks’ The Croods and ending with the August release of Disneytoon Studios’ Planes, there have been six big budget animated films released from most of the major Hollywood animation studios along with one direct-to-video release which was put in theaters first. With so many animated films to choose from, not all films performed equally at the box office and in the hearts and minds of the movie going public.

Early Word on Blue Sky’s ‘EPIC’ is Positive

EPIC, the new full-length animated feature by Blue Sky Studios hits theaters on May 24th, and early word from the top critics is fairly positive. Directed by Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Robots), EPIC focuses on a war being fought in our backyards–literally.
