Legendary artist and co-creator of Studio Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki has been named as a recipient of the 2014 Governors Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Studio Ghibli, the whimsical company responsible for such brilliant films as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, has been making headlines recently. First, Miyazaki announced his retirement and his last film, The Wind Rises, debuted with much critical acclaim. Now, purported inner turmoil is threatening to close the doors of the studio he left. However, despite doom and gloom articles abound on the status of the most prominent Japanese animation studio, the official word from the Ghibli’s mouth about their current hiatus is lacking a terminal diagnosis.
The Walt Disney Studios announced today that revered animation director Hayao Miyazaki will come out of retirement to direct a remake of Disney’s 1985 animated feature The Black Cauldron. “We couldn’t be more thrilled that Hayao Miyazaki has agreed to lead this exciting project,” said a Disney executive. “The Black Cauldron is one of the films in our canon that, well, could use a reboot. Miyazaki wanted a meaty project, particularly one with an oracular pig, so we decided to give him this one.” Miyazaki had no comment.
The English-language dub version of Studio Ghibli’s 2011 film From Up on Poppy Hill opens today in New York and will expand to Los Angeles and other select U.S. cities later this month. The official theater list and current U.S. release schedule is available on the film’s Facebook page. The English-speaking voice cast includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Gillian Anderson, Bruce Dern, Christina Hendricks, Aubrey Plaza and Beau Bridges. The film is being distributed in the U.S. by GKIDS Films.
Over the years, Studio Ghibli has become one of the most beloved and iconic names in animated cinema. Studio Ghibli is one of the few animation houses that still has a reverence for hand-drawn animation and nearly every film they release is nothing short of a master work; especially when the name Miyazaki is attached.
In this episode Marc & Matt discuss the animation Oscar winners, films by Studio Ghibli, the Shrek series (& Puss in Boots), as well as the animated adaptations of Dr. Seuss.
