At the 2014 Licensing Expo happening this week in Las Vegas, an advertisement from Sony Pictures Entertainment provided a promotional image of its new CG-animated Popeye film.
Sony announced Thursday that they will be pushing back the release date for their third installment of The Smurfs franchise from August 2015 to August 2016. They are consequently pulling Goosebumps, the feature based on the popular 90’s R.L. Stine books, up from March 2016 to August 2015.
I am not a fan of The Smurfs, particularly the hybrid live-action/CG films that Sony Pictures Animation released in 2011 and 2013. When the story came out that Sony was going to make yet another Smurfs film, it sounded like less than thrilling news to me.
But maybe there’s hope for this new film after all. It’s not going to be a live-action/CG hybrid like its predecessors from Sony, but rather a full length CG animated feature.
Tom Fonss and Stanford Clark join Marc Vibbert to discuss Big Hero 6. From its Marvel comic book origins to what Disney has released so far about the film, we cover it all.
Also Discussed: Sequels to Cars and The Incredibles, Blue Sky’s Peanuts teaser trailer, and Party Central / Muppets Most Wanted.

Sony Pictures Animation has announced their slate of animated feature films for 2015 and beyond. First up is The Smurfs 3, but this time Peyo’s little blue creations are going to be in a fully animated film rather than part of a CG/live-action hybrid like Sony’s previous two Smurfs films. Directing the untitled film is Kelly Asbury (Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet). The new Smurfs feature is scheduled to be released August 2015.
We were lucky enough to be invited by the good people at Sony Pictures Animation to their press event for the release of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 on DVD/Blu-ray/3D Blu-ray (out on January 28th) this past Wednesday and the event was inventive, informative and quite tasty! It was my first time visiting an animation studio and I was impressed with the quaintness, yet professionalism of the staff. We got to venture around before events began and the quirky touches all around, such as life-size wooden character cutouts, concept artwork and spoof movie posters added to the whimsy of being there.
Stanford Clark joins Marc to discuss their personal top five animated films of 2013. Which of your favorites from last year made their lists? They also look towards the future and discuss all of 2014’s upcoming animated films.
Also discussed: Doctor Who‘s 50th Anniversary and Christmas Specials, The Lone Ranger, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Mary Poppins.
