Anyone who read my review of Pixar’s Inside Out knows that it would take a supremely amazing film to compete with what I consider one of the all-time great animated films. I did not expect a film like IO going into Minions, though. I like quirky comedies; I enjoy the occasional wacky prequel. However, by its stark contrast with Pixar’s latest and greatest, Minions can’t escape a comparison. Where Inside Out is subtle, thoughtful, and fresh, Minions is loud, mindless, and generally stinky.
Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures announced this week release dates for three films in their pipeline.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ hit film Frozen took home the Golden Globe last night for Best Animated Feature Film. Frozen won over DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 2. The co-directors of Frozen Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee were on hand to accept the award. Also in attendance at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony in Los Angeles was Disney and Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter (the Golden Globes just happened to coincide with his birthday so the award was a nice birthday present, that’s for sure).
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s mega-hit Despicable Me 2 continues to break records. The animated comedy earned $80 million in Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download sales during its first week of availability in the home entertainment market.
Nominations for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual Golden Globe Awards were announced today in Hollywood, CA. The Golden Globe Awards have award categories for both television and film. Similar to the Academy Awards, they also have a Best Animated Feature Film category.
ASIFA-Hollywood announced today the nominations for its 41st Annual Annie Awards. With 30 award categories that encompass animation production, individual achievement, and juried awards, the Annie Awards honor and recognize the year’s best animation in film, TV, and commercials.
