The upcoming re-introduction of the once popular Trolls to pop culture is picking up steam as DreamWorks Animation has tapped Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After) to direct the animated feature film which is expected to hit theaters in November of 2016. Joining Mitchell is award-winning veteran TV writer Erica Rivinoja (South Park, Up All Night) and the project will be produced by Shrek Forever After‘s Gina Shay, a DWA stalwart.
The Trolls film is just one part of DreamWorks’ grand plan for the onslaught of the colorful, bushy-headed dolls back into the pop culture lexicon. The film hopes to explain, via musical comedy, how the Troll creatures got their crazy hair.
Bill Damaschke, Chief Creative Officer at DWA is excited for the announced creative team.
“Mike’s pedigree in shaping storied with already beloved characters is second to none,” he said. “And Erica’s amazing sense of comedy will introduce the Trolls to a new generation of fans while keeping the spirit and appeal audiences have loved for years.”
The Trolls dolls have been around since the late 1950s when a poor Danish fisherman named Thomas Dam carved one from wood for his daughter’s Christmas gift. Since then, the Dam family has overseen the marketing of the infectious little buggers which saw huge rises of popularity in the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and what DreamWorks Animation hopes, the near future.
The Trolls feature film is expected to hit theaters on November 4, 2016.
