Casting Bits: Disney’s Planes and Blue Sky’s Rio 2

Some casting news today from both Disney and Blue Sky Studios for their films Planes and Rio 2 respectively. Recently we posted a trailer to Disney’s Planes and at the time we were unsure who would be replacing Jon Cryer as the film’s main protagonist, Dusty Crophopper. Well today Disney has announced that Dane Cook has been tapped to now voice the lead character.

PLANES

The film Planes is inspired by the world of Pixar’s Cars franchise, produced by DisneyToon Studios and directed by Klay Hall (King of the Hill, The Simpsons). Hall had this to say about the casting of Cook:

“Dane Cook brings unmatched charisma and brilliant comedic timing and instincts to the character. He gives Dusty a great edge.”

Here’s a brief synopsis for the film:

The all-new story offers an exciting cast of characters and centers on Dusty’s high-flying dream. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing, so he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Planes is set to fly into theaters on August 9, 2013 and is produced by Traci Balthazor-Flynn & executive produced by John Lasseter.

The other bit of news comes from Blue Sky Studios centering on their sequel, Rio 2. The returning cast includes: Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jemaine Clement, will.i.am, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Bebel Gilberto, Jake T. Austin, and Jamie Foxx. They will be joined by newcomers to the franchise: Andy Garcia, Bruno Mars, Kristin Chenoweth, Rita Moreno, Amandla Stenberg, Rachel Crow, Pierce Gagnon, and Natalie Morales.

So what do you think of this casting news? I myself am interested in seeing Dane Cook take on the role of Dusty Crophopper if not for any other reason than it seems like a complete 180 from originally having Jon Cryer in the role. As for Rio 2 I’m glad to see the original film’s cast return and pretty excited by some of the new cast as well. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
