Review: Disney Animation’s Beautiful ‘Short Films Collection’ Is a Must-Own for Fans
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new Short Films Collection is truly a stunner. The collection, which is now available on Digital HD platforms and will be available on Blu-ray August 18th, includes 12 of the studios’ animated short films made between the years 2000–2015. While some shorts are fairly new and have been recently seen in theaters, other titles are older and more obscure. Overall, it’s just great to have all of these beloved shorts in one combined and winsome collection.

‘Cinderella’ Cure for ‘Frozen Fever’
I prefer bad news first, so let’s begin with Frozen Fever. This 7 minute short that precedes Kenneth Branagh’s masterpiece retelling of Disney’s 1950 animated classic, Cinderella, is just annoying. Pandering, cheap, ridiculous premise (Elsa sneezes and snow babies pop out of her), cliché song and overall, just an obvious attempt at selling some new Frozen merchandise in the form of teeny stuffed snowmen and an Elsa dress that’s the same–but now in green! I pray this short is not indicative of what Frozen 2 is going to look like, but if the snowshoe fits…run away. Luckily, this brief, gratuitous sequel is not 90+ minutes long (yet) and the film that follows it is magical enough to almost make you forget Elsa singing, “a cold never bothered me anyway” (Get it? Cause she’s got a cold! And that’s also a line from “Let it Go.” Get it? Insert gun emoticon.) Almost.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen is not only a box office and award-winning hit, it has become a YouTube sensation as well with fans posting countless videos of them (and their children) singing their favorite tunes from the film. In response, Disney will release a sing-along version of Frozen in select U.S. theaters beginning Friday, January 31.
2014 Oscar Nominations Announced
The nominees were announced today for the 2014 Academy Awards. In the animation categories, five feature films and five short films were nominated (see below). Also, two songs from animated films have been nominated in the Original Song category: “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 and “Let It Go” from Frozen. And Pixar Animation Studios was snubbed again by not receiving any nominations for the great Monsters University and their beautiful short film The Blue Umbrella. Here are the animation nominees…
‘Frozen’ Freak-Out! Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Release Dates Announced
Disney has officially announced when all the Frozen fiends can get their perpetual fixes. The studio will release the film on Blu-ray and DVD on March 18th with an early release of the film digitally on February 25th. Disney’s first go at pre releasing the digital copy happened with Wreck-it-Ralph and the results must have been good for them to do it again. This has been a definite trend in the animation and film world at large of late.
