Casting Bits: Disney’s Planes and Blue Sky’s Rio 2

Some casting news today from both Disney and Blue Sky Studios for their films Planes and Rio 2 respectively. Recently we posted a trailer to Disney’s Planes and at the time we were unsure who would be replacing Jon Cryer as the film’s main protagonist, Dusty Crophopper. Well today Disney has announced that Dane Cook has been tapped to now voice the lead character.

Dreamworks Animation Announces Layoffs and 2012 Financial Results

DreamWorks Animation announced their fourth quarter and year-end 2012 financial results today. From the company press release, DreamWorks Animation reported a total quarterly revenue of $264.7 million and a net loss of $82.7 million, or a loss of $0.98 per share. For all of 2012 (they follow a calendar year), they reported total revenue of $749.8 million and a net loss of $36.4 million, or a loss of $0.43 per share.

Way back in 2011 we first heard about the film Planes, a spinoff taking place above the world of Pixar’s Cars and Cars 2. In this new trailer we get a little bit better of an idea for the story line of the film then what we had known previously. Though it’s a spinoff of a Pixar film it is actually being produced by DisneyToon Studios, whose last film released theatrically was Pooh’s Heffalump Movie back in 2005. VFX Protests at the Oscars

In the wake of VFX studio Rhythm and Hues filing for bankruptcy, protests were started at the Oscars outside the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Rhythm and Hues were responsible for the visual effects used in the film Life of Pi which ironically won an Oscar in the same category. When the team tried to bring the tragic bankruptcy to the audience’s attention during their acceptance speech, they were cut off by a crass rendition of the Jaws theme.

Beautiful New Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 Poster

Hot on the heels of Pixar releasing their new Monsters University poster, Sony Pictures Animation has debuted the first poster for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. The film was previously subtitled “Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers”, which in my opinion is a better title then just adding the number 2. The 85th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony Recap

The 85th Academy Awards show is now in the record books. With host Seth MacFarlane (sans Stewie, unfortunately), Hollywood’s big night was full of fashion, surprises, musical numbers a-go-go (“Gold-fin-GAH” anyone?) and speeches great and, well, not so great (although the Jaws theme was a nice touch when time was running out). Overall, it was a reminder about what a terrific year it’s been for movies, including animated ones.
